I will be spending some weeks in Spain later this year. I notice that the M map shows zilch in the way of standing stones. Is this because there are none, or has nobody yet catalogued those that do exist? If the latter, where are they?

Dave.
Much of Spain is full of megalithic remains, including, I think, the largest dolmen in the world. Its just that nobody has yet got round to researching and cataloguing anything yet on the portal (not 100% true, as Klingon has started to put some sites on). It is a very big task to do all this, so if you are in any way inclined to help, then please do !
A couple of internet sites which may be of interest to you in your search for Spanish megaliths are as follows.
A good starting point would be here, http://www.megalitos.es Going to the "espana" page, there is a map of spain, broken down into the regions, with links to each, and from there a rough map showing some of the many megaliths to be found in each region, with photographs of many. It also has other links.
Some Catalan megaliths are here http://personal.telefonica.terra.es/web/arcis/eng/english.html
Good luck with your search.

Here's a little bit of Spain

Julian Cope's book The Megalithic European also covers these sites and has some other sites in Spain.

Ta muchly to The Captain for your prompt response. I have bookmarked the sites and will be assessing them shortly (and reporting back!).

Hi (same anonymous again)
Where in Spain are you heading? If you are near the Portugese border then it'll be easy to see some great sites. If you are anywhere near Basque country then you're in the middle of some amazing, but hard to locate sites.
For some pictures, but sadly no info see THIS PAGE and keep pressing "Next Picture"
Love THIS ONE!

Thanks again to A Nonymous for the info and pictures, particularly Mairexte dolmen 1. Fantastic. I will be in the Alicante area, but have not found any local info on line. Cope's tome has no info at all on this region (it's pretty sparse on Spain generally). I'll keep trying. DMS

Me Again
My parents live close(ish) to Alicante in Mazaron, where there's buckets of Roman stuff (also Cartagena is only just down the road), but there is very little megalithic stuff in the Alicante area. I'll be very interested in anything you do find. There is a Neolithic village above Puerto del Mazaron that I haven't written up yet on megalithomania. Must do that tonight!
The local tourist brochures do show one roofless dolmen, but it is 60 odd miles inland, such is the derth of (known) monuments around there.
Cheers

Thanks to Fourwinds again. I don't have a problem with driving so 60 miles is nowt! It's finding the location that is likely to be the problem. (Incidentally, where is Mazaron?)! Do you know of anyone/org who may know of potential sites? The Alicante museum has an Archaeology section and website, but no email address. Obviously a starting point is better than nothing. DMS

If you have "written up" the Neolithic village, where is it?

There's actually a great deal of excellent information hidden in this web site but it is presented in a very odd way. We would like to 'Portalise' the information in it so as to plot all the sites on our map (with links to the chap's web site of course).
If there's anyone else out there who enjoys tracking down, compiling and organising this sort of information for the use of everyone then you'd be very welcome to join our team effort. Please contact me off list.
Unlike the UK and Ireland for most countries this information has not been compiled (or at least made widely accessible if it has been). That's what we are here for.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi
Mazarron is between Cartagena and Alicante in the Costa Brava.
The Neolithic village is called Cabeza del Plomo and is badly signposted just outside the port. Local tourist maps show it in totally the wrong place. Hopefully I will get round to writing it up this weekend. Looks like I'm going to be snowed in again.

On http://www.megalitos.es/ take a look at the Murcia and Malaga sections. Cabezo del Plomo is listed there (only poor photo of the ruined tomb though, not the village)
The Bagil Dolmen is on all of the Murcia tourist literature, but no tourist info point I've asked at knows where it is!
I do have it marked on a map now, but it's a long hard drive up mountain roads to get there.
