Hi, I was wondering if anyone on here was familiar with the Neolithic Archaeology on Shetland. I'm in the process of applying to do a PhD on the island and it would be great to hear anyones experiences of the sites there - there's so little written on the period in this area that I'm after anything I can get at the moment!

| Seems to work quite easy on here, if you go to the left of the page and click on guides by county, then just go to shetland, there is loads.
Also, if you go to the modern antiquarium, they too have a fabulous record of the ancient sites.
The Brocs are stunning buildings.

The other lot banned brochs at one point for being too boring, warlike or some other reason I didn't follow. Try http://www.rockstanza.info for brochs in Shetland, excellent. There's a bit of Neolithic stuff too. Perhaps you can report back with what you find.

Don't know if this will be of any use to you but if you go to the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland website at http://www.rcahms.gov.uk and register for their Pastmap database (its free) you will be able to call up information on various sites around shetland via zooming in on the map. The site can be a bit unreliable at times but its worth sticking with as the amount of information present is excellent and has references to other sources of info too. It took me a wee while to get to grips with the site but have a look and if you need any help, drop me a email and I'll try my best to guide you.

Rather more reliable is the canmore database, also at the RCAHMS website. Search for 'broch' under type of site & it will bring up most of the known sites. A good tip is to break up your search by region to avoid going over the maximum of 200 sites displayed under any one search. In this particular case, type in Shetland in the field marked 'council', this gives you a total of 109 broch or possible broch sites for that area.
