We have just begun to research our local stone circle which has been more or less ignored up to now. The ring is 44.2m in diameter and still contains 64 stones, though it is thought that originally there were eighty or more. The style is similar to the circles in the Carrowmore cemetery; it is possible that Beltany is a transitional ring between late passage-tombs and early stone circles.
I'm really looking for suggestions about things to look for in alignments. Is it possible to calculate the line of sunrise/sunset on a particular date? (We can't guarantee decent weather to find these by observation in any decent timescale - it's often cloudy in Donegal).
We've done some geophys and know what the underlying structures look like. A few stones have cupmarks and one stone has 46 cupmarks on it, which is an interesting number ie, 1/8th of a year, give or take.
We've noticed some alignments to nearby hilltops, but I suppose given the number of stones, there must be some coincidental alignments, too.
Any and all advice or suggestions would be very welcome. This is unexplored territory!
