I own a cave system listed on your site. You say it is on private land, which it is. It is also an SSSI. We have had a lot of problems with this site, such as graffiti, cutting out a fossil, lighting fires. I don't expect your members are doing this but I have to investigate when I hear or see people there. Instead of suggesting people traspass, which you do, I'd much rather give my phone number so people can ring me and then I know when there are folks up there. Otherwise I or my neighbour has to stop what we are doing and go and investigate. The alternative is to stop up the site again; I cannot leave kids up there endangering themselves.
I'm not willing to give any info about myself at present. I hope you see this as a friendly offer to promote access and get round a diffiult problem.

Dear Anonymous,
I don't believe we are advocating people to trespass, please see our Charter which is linked from every page of this site.
As you don't say which cave system you are talking about I'm unable to say any more without hearing back from you. My e-mail address is listed under Contact - Tech to the left.
Thanks,
Andy

This is very disturbing for a number of reasons.
Mainly because people are trespassing on private land and vandalising SSSI's, but also because Anon has suggested that the Portal is advocating such trespass. I am sure that the vast majority of members would condemn such actions.
Please would Anon let us know why he thinks we are promoting such behaviour.
On a practical point I think Anon should cage the cave and only let parties in by advance notice (as he suggests). This would serve both our purposes ie to preserve ancient monuments and save Anon a load of hassle.

I can totally understand the land owners concerns as caves are dangerous places, and need to be treated with utmost respect.
I am quite sure that no megalithic member would ever deface or damage a cave in anyway, but perhaps if the land owner let us know which cave he is concerned about, we could remove the grid ref and location, but still list the cave with the telephone number.
It would be a sad day indeed if the caves and potholes around Ingleton were locked up, and left to muster, forgotten and unloved.
As always, it is the abmismal few that spoil things for the respectful majority.

| And risk that these locations will be forgotten?

Well at least we now know the cave is Ingleton. Lots of caves there which at least puts cavers out of the equation (they are all searching for the deeper stuff, not bits on the surface). All the cavers I know adhere to a code of conduct.
This leaves us with morons who have no sense.
Again I say to Anon "Cage it."

Myself and my misses went to Raw head once on a easter bank holiday and stayed the night in a lovely cave called the 'Queens parlour'. it's situated just below the footpath of the 'sandstone trail'. we parked the car off the lane onto the grass verge out of anyones way. but this didn't stop anyone from disliking our quiet night together by our little fire. When we went back to the car in the morning we discorvered two tyres slashed! being a bank holiday and a couple of miles from the main road, this was a big problem and messed up our weekend. thanx to one person who drove us to nantwich and back to get tyres for an Allegro which was no easy task.
So take heed, even on public land you can get the unexpected so show respect to other peoples land and it may work out better.
i still go to rawhead but make a bigger walk to get there!

We don't know if the cave is in Ingleton, that was just an example given by Nicola. And to Klingon, if the location was given to within 10 or 5 Sq miles, and even a photo or 2 or 3, and a phone number, then it would not be forgotten. I think it's a good solution to the problem.
