I've always wanted us to include videos in what we can offer at the Portal but hosting them ourselves is not practical. Fortunately there's a really good alternative way to do this.
You can now post Youtube (and similar) videos in Portal comments! Scroll right down the Brodgar page to see this in action.
You will need to be logged with your Portal user ID in to do this.
I won't repeat the instructions on how to do this here, see your video hosting service for more details
As with photos, there must be loads of people with video clips from ancient sites lying around unused (I know I have), let's get them dug out and transferred and see if we can counter some of the absoulte drivel on Youtube with some culture!
Most digital cameras can record short video clips, how about creating your own mini tour to a site and posting it here.
To encourage you, we will have a category for 'best video' in the Portal's forthcoming creative competition.

Quite! Michael Faraday explained this parlour trick nearly 150yrs ago. Has the Hobbit risen from its lair yet again?
Jim.

Just to note, if anyone else does this (here's hoping), YouTube seems to chop off about 1 to 2 seconds from either end of the clip.
Can anyone recommend any software for editing .mov files?

Hope you don't mind me doing a test here. The YouTube link is very large and I'm wondering if one can adjust the width/height parameters (which are set to 425/350) and still get a sensible link. I'm trying 318/262...
Voila!

Oh, the video stays small!

I think I'll stick with 318/262

Jimit,
I would like to thank you, for demonstrating ever so clearly yet again how you and ever so many others totally misunderstand.
I posted upon the portal talking shop a clip of youtube.
This provided
A, a link to youtube,
B, demonstrated a method of demonstration , I find impressive.
You have demonstrated why so many feel the need to stay out of most of the other forums.
The relevance to ancient sites and stone movement , will be demonstrated in good time, it was not anything to do with this that I posted that link, but it is the content only that you immeadiately latched onto and attacked.
It is your opinion that the content of this clip and many other themes discussed have nothing to do with ancient sites.
It is my opinion that the content of this clip has a vast relevance to ancient sites.
My posting the clip had no relevance to its actual content, merely how it was made and its method of creation, as i stated in my origonal post,
" it says more than words"
I should have explained that more clearly.
You have clearly demonstrated ,ever so well your particuler opinion.

Just to clarify the position , and demonstrate differing peoples views of what ancient sites are about.
Would this sort of clip be desired in the stone henge section?

Chyknel,
We meet again,
The clip I posted had no relevance to why I
posted it, Jimit has made it a relevance in that it demonstrates his immeadiate attack upon my posting, you simply compound that even further.
Jimits origonal post contained personal abuse aimed at myself, referring to me as a hobbit arisen from its lair again, I found that offensive, not been called hobbit, but associating the forum provided by Andy as a lair.
He with that insinuation , not only posted an offensive slur against me, but against all the other good people who have felt it required to reside in there, out of the way of such remarks been constantly hurled at them.
I added on to my origonal posting, which was directed to Waterbouy, in explanation of why it had no relevance in the first place, but it has now.
And you are simply compounding something that had no need to happen in the first place, why?

Come off it kevin, are you saying you didn't even notice it was about anti-gravity (which you say is relevant to megaliths)? Couldn't you have illustrated "the way it was put together" by posting something about knitting patterns or spinach or anything rather than that?
Nay lad, you've brought an "alternative" topic up here yet again and you shouldn't. This is the Portal Talking Shop. The Portal Talking Cr&p Shop is down the corridor.
(There, that takes the heat off that wicked Jimit for saying it was a hobbit hole!)

Chyknel,
If there is a portal talking cr&p shop?
I am unaware of it, you perhaps know where it is and reside there?

Four doors down, knock twice and give the password.
It's a bit exclusive, you have to say the words "Neolithic anti-gravity" without giggling. Not many manage it.

Everybody needs to get over the idea that if you disagree with someone's ideas that gives you the right to disparage them. We all need to stop it. It's a big world and there are lots of ideas and world views in it. Everyone should be treated with the respect due a fellow human being, regardless of world view or creed. We all know that by now. No one deserves to be treated like a less worthy being.
Everyone in the world thinks his or her view is right, and when I say that, everyone thinks, "Yes, but mine is! That's not going to change. No one's talking crap, on any part of the forum, not even Chyknel. Everyone's voicing their truths. We all love and honour the sites. Let's make that our center and overlook our differences.

"Everybody needs to get over the idea that if you disagree with someone's ideas that gives you the right to disparage them."
No they don't. I happen to think a lot of things that get put forward are complete and utter garbage. I have a right to say ideas are nonsense - just as some of the proponents of those ideas take every opportunity to say that science is bilge. If people want to confuse someone saying an idea is ludicrous with a personal attack on them that's unfortunate but erroneous.
Aluta, in my world Neolithic anti-gravity is an utter joke. In yours it's "worthy of respect". I don't think I have to be told to enter your world do I? Well if I do, the answer is no thanks.
