Further to my earlier post about my visit yesterday to this stone circle, there is a cairn 20 m or so due W of the circle which I noticed had been partially excavated on its E aspect. The excavation appears to be recent, and crude, the spoil simply left to tumble into the hollow below. Anyone know to whom this should be reported before this cairn is further mutilated and any artifacts lost to history?

Hiya,
I popped up here on Sunday to see first hand what the damage was like and to identify exactly which cairn it was.
Its all a bit confusing up there, but after checking with others on TMA and perusing Magic and the HER, I'm pretty sure its actually an 18th/19th century spoil heap from the pit right next to it. The shape is wrong for a barrow on the moors for a start, something I didn't realise till I got up on it and found out how steep it is.
Sadly I didn't see the post re the circular feature before I went up, so that'll have to wait till next time.

i think the same also. the flat stones in this heap dont look like typical cairn material when compared to the stones found in the large one adjacent to wet withins circle

Thats a very salient point! From a distance it looks like a bronze age cairn, close up, not so much.
