Many thanks to Woadrunner for contacting us with this information.

The landowner has suddenly decided to block all access to the Northern henge and there doesn't seem to be anyone willing to take this on board.
More details on the sitepage.

In 1998 a stewardship agreement was put in place at the two southernmost henges. This also included the area between the three. This did not, unfortunately include the northernmost henge

The N Yorks County Council Public Consultation Draft 'Thornborough Henges Conservation Plan' has a section on p94 on Integrated Land Management. This recommended conversion from arable farming to pasture throughout the plan area:- where fields have been deep ploughed the archaeology can be damaged to a depth of 1/3 m, or more in some cases. Cattle do less damage except maybe to the topsoil.

The northern henge is under woodland and my guess is that cattle and trees would do less damage than the ploughing and quarrying gravel from the central henge - or bulldozing the earthworks in the southern henge, as actually happened!

The conservation plan is a fine and reasoned document and can be d/l from the following link

I'm up for some protest/campaigning on this one. We could organise a mass 'trespass' perhaps. Letters and emails need to be sent to everyone you can think of (please post any contacts here). Contact the 'land owner' (I believe we all own such places) and demand his release of our heritage.
I hereby declare war on him from the Brigantes Nation. Hail Brigantia.

Do Tarmac own it and let it to the farmer? Is it under the protection of EH or similar? It's important to establish ownership otherwise any attempts are going to be buck-passed from pillar to post and any campaign needs to be focused towards the right recipient(s) e.g. do Tarmac own it and let it to the farmer?

For years, George Chaplin was at the forefront of the Thornborough campaign to save the archaeology on the land surrounding the henges and he'd know more than anyone who to contact for the most impact. He posted here under the name Venutius but I've not seen him on the Portal for quite a while. He or someone still connected with the Henges may be able to save you a lot of time and effort, here are a couple of links to start you off

No response from English heritage in Yorkshire. Can you all email them please and tell them about our concerns of access and cow damage. Hundreds of emails will prompt action.

Also are there any legal eagles on the Portal? Time for legal action I reckon . . .
I also need to discover the name of the 'landowner'.
I've played with the land registry but not overly clear . . .

Come on folks let's claim our heritage back.

EH are probably waiting for the results of the Priddy case which is due on the 26th of October.
Once sentence is passed on Mr Penny for the destruction of part of the Priddy henge EH will have a clearer idea of what they can and can't do legally to other landowners with henges on their land.

You can usually get a reply from EH if you CC lots of others into the email.
Local and County archaeo's, Local MP, newspapers etc etc.

I think Pete has a good point about waiting until after the Priddy decision has been made.

Also, EH don't have the reputation of being the most up-to-date organisation therefore, for effective communication, I'd suggest anyone who wants to protest or to draw their attention to the latest actions at the Northern Henge should put their points in writing, snailmail variety.

Put yourselves in their place, what would you give more credence to, an email from pixiemoonbeamstar@hotmail.com or a nicely presented letter from J.B. Smith at 123 High Street in a town whose name you've heard of ?

FWIW I've always found ringing English Heritage to be much more effective than emailing them.

Unfortunately whilst public access is morally right, its not legally enforceable so English Heritage won't do a thing about that. However they have to care by law about damage through neglect by a landowner to a scheduled monument. So if anyone rings them, mention that!

Reply from EH North Yorks (Neil Redfern). Sounds as though they are on the case.

"We are very aware of the concerns you set out about the central henge at Thornborough and we are in discussions with the owners about this issue and how it can be resolved.

As you know it is one of a number of complex issues at Thornborough. Please rest assured we are taking what steps we can to see the current issues addressed and long-term future of the henges secured."
