(Sorry for my rant.)
Manchester Museum are displaying more buls**t with their appalling and naff display accompanying the Lindow Man.
If this is how we are going to treat the Lindow Man then he send him back to London.
Can you believe this cr*p? What is wrong with a good old fashioned educational display. Instead of related aretefacts we get Care Bear's and Bros LP's (because that was the period when Lindow Man was found)! Plus a load of 'memories' of of ordinary folk about how they felt when the discovery was made, and other touchy-feely stuff. Worst of all is the contribution made by so called 'druids' and 'pagans' ( Emma Restall Orr) which the museum has encouraged and sees nothing wrong with this. Not to mention the encouragement of punters to leave 'offerings' and write messages to the Lindow Man. Yeurgh... excuse me while I'm sick. The whole thing takes 2 minutes to see, zero ambience.

Well, yes, but with so little to go on, they can't give him much of a life, so the folksy bit is all he's got. It brings him out of The Museum and back on the street.

I'm suprised they didn't have rap music playing in the background Chimera to make it accesible to the kids.
I really don't see how this kind of dumbing down makes history more accesable to kids. I loved seeing LM as a child, you don't need all this BS. You get the feeling they're doing it just to cause controversy because they don't beleive anyone will visit otherwise.
I guess it just more evidence of the sleazy, road that Manchester University is going down and putting image and spin before education and learning.
They could have provided many more items, (they were offered them apparently from the British Museum but turned them down in favour of a conceptual art style display).

In the Moesgard museum in Aarhus in Denmark has the Grauballe Man exhibition, no frills just the man behind Glass. Simple but effective,no music,no hype or false emotion.

Looks so much better - I would much rather a real museum like that hosted the Lindow Man than one that has no interest in history or education.

Museums tend to be very stuffy with "their" exhibits.
As a youngster I used to love scouring the Dundee Museum and library(now known as THE MACMANUS CENTRE....)but in latter years they never had a viewer/visitor/customer/consumer friendly outlook....The Mary Slessor corner was overshadowed by a large depiction of a"Stone-age hut"...which took up so much room that several long admired exhibits ended up in storage and being made of bits of tree and plant didn't half set off my hay fever(@Paul C...a childhood ailment I've gotten over by judicious use of anthracite and rose quartz!!!!)
The British Museum isn't much better...policed by stony faced jobsworths with no affinity for the curiosty of the young mind..all programmed to say,"Don't Touch This...Don't Touch That!"but not explaining why certain things "shouldn't" be touched as forbidden to touch

The late Mr. P Marsh Esq. was done over and stonkered and shoved in a bog. He NEEDS his care-bears and kiddies' letters, the less-fortunate , oxygen-challenged elderly-person he is.

Good shooting. They had a farm in Lakes district and went to China then Oz, 1870s. The line came from Covenanters on the borders, and James VI exiled 1 to France until death. His grandson had 9000 merks on his head by Charles II, and he preached in fields while dodging arrest. They had twirly neurocircuits in DNA or summat.

And why is it bad to have contributions by pagans and Druids. If you are talking about the comments that he should be reburied this is not the stance of all those who follow a pagan path.
It might not be to your liking but at least he has his own exhibition unlike in the British Museum where people just walked straight past him.
It was big news when he was discovered so why not ask people what they thought about the discovery and bring back a few memories of the 80's at the same time.
He was discovered in that era. Yes he came from the Iron Age. But if some of those people who see this exhibition go away and want to find out more about the past then that can only be a good thing.
As for dignity it wasn't very dignified the way he was cut in half by a peat cutter.

I just think its irresponsible for an educational institution to be putting into peoples minds a false connection between ancient ancestors with neo-pagans and druids. I'm not sure how anyone could argue otherwise...
It might be more acceptable if these were voices expressed along with other religious groups viewpoints (though it would still be highly naff).
I don't think he should be reburied, just displayed with a little more style - not amongst a load of cheap MDF units, 80's tack and neo pagan paraphanalia.
I agree it would be great if it encourages people to go away and learn more about the Iron Age, however this exhibition was about the 1980's not the Iron Age - which is why it seems a bit peculiar to hijack the poor sod. The story of the Lindow Man is fascinating and I'm sure many kids and adults would be thrilled to learn more but somehow they managed to make a totally unemotional, dull and stupid exhibit.
I doubt Lindow Man would be too impressed with it all either... as for neo-pagans - he would have worn their ball's for earings!

That's a fair point but it's the sort of thing that can be said about any and every naffization of history. And bringing things down to an absolute basic level in the hope of making slack jawed Big Brother addicts into future professors of archaeology is a bit of a leap of faith. I'd have thought you'd stimulate more people into an interest in the past by aiming just a tad higher.
(Apologies to slack jawed Big Brother addicts).
