I heard this mentioned on the local news on TV the other night, and what they showed there was a stony sort of outcrop in a shoulder-high bank, more like a long shelf, or big step, than an altar. I remember thinking it would make a good bench from which to watch proceedings. I believe they said it was half a mile, or was it 'half an hour' (?) south of a main road. Sounded fairly remote, but then Dartmoor is quite wild and desolate. There are literally thousands of potential 'altars' on Dartmoor -due to the way the granite was pushed up and formed into big slabs - so take your pick (but don't harm the poor innocent animals, and don't make fires, or leave rubbish!!)

The same thing has been happening in Dorset, just a stones throw away from the Remstone circle. A local farmer told me that there was a history behind such rituals.

Don't know the area, though my latent interest in stones did get switched on, on Dartmoor.

Vixen Tor is HERE, which makes the nearest ancient site according to The Portal's grid ref search facilitiy Merrivale 4. Beyond that, I couldn't say.

This sort of stuff was going on in The Peaks a few years back, with reports of the Barbrook Circles being staked out by police for Solstice...

Any-one know where this "pagan alter" is:

The spectre of occult practices in the West reared its head yesterday as police investigated a second case of ritual sheep slaughter near an ancient Pagan altar on an isolated moor. Six sheep were found with their necks broken and their eyes removed on land at Moortown near the edge of Dartmoor.

Pagan myself and wouldnt think of doing stuff like this.
Thing is what is this alter. Its described as ancient. Is it natural or an archaeological feature and is this why the ritual element has come into.

Any-one know this area at all.
