In Hertfordshire - the only place to be is on Ivinghoe Beacon. Choose the highest place where you have a clear view to the east and then the whole world around you will light up with the rising sun. Ridgeway starts at Ivinghoe so you have a direct tangible link with Stonehenge too.

Not sure Jim. I suspect it may well be a Y2K thing - it's called a 'Peace Circle', a sort of cross (sorry!) between a stone circle and a north american 'spirit wheel' for some reason.
Nice outlier next to the lake though, and a nice recumbent 'Africa stone' (shaped like the continent) too.
Quite a few events are held there I believe.

How long has there been a (modern) stone circle at Willen Lake? I used to go there frequently with my grandad (about 10/15 years ago) but don't remember seeing anything then. Was it a millenium thing?
[In response to this thread: I don't know, sorry]

I'd suspect the closest would be either:
a) the modern stone circle in Milton Keynes (on the shores of Willen Lake, near the buddhist temple).
b) Alternatively, if you fancy 'chavving' it, you could see if anything is going on at Waulud's Bank in Luton.
c) Or you could watch the view from Dunstable Downs by Five Knolls. Not sure about sunwise orientation at any of those though...

Can't afford to travel the 303 route! Though a part of my heart will be there.
Hope someone can help.
Thanks
