I know, but whatever the purpose, it was important enough that at least one should be present (at Ynys Hir).

My problem is: the rule of thumb is that you can think of a standing stone as 1/3 below ground 2/3 above. (almost certainly rubbish when applied to posts) Would make the post a little over two feet above ground level.

Such is the terrain that a two foot post wouldn't cut it as a long distance marker. However, the stone circle was "badly made", little or no holes with packing stones for the stones in the circle, so perhaps the post was considerably higher, but it didn't fall as the post hole was in good condition.

So it's another mystery. What good is a single say 1ft to 6ft post?

Then again many N. Wales Bronze Age sites have had small jars containing several inner ear bones from young children buried within. Equally as enigmatic although somewhat more unpleasant as these bones are found "deep within the brain".

So, if the post is not a marker, what? an altar? a bird table? something to stand on? something to sit on? a lectern?

(Tim don't get too excited about Ynys Hir, it is remarkable because it is one of the few in Wales to have been excavated)

If stone circles evolved from and with their wooden counterparts then you'd expect to find the odd bit of timber languishing within and without the circle.

A few minutes digging around reveals nothing further about the holes & posts; plenty about the stones though, and MoD ranges.

Not very helpful, eh.

Postholes within stone circles, what's that all about then?

In particular: Ynys Hir stone circle in Powys.

1 posthole, 1ft in diameter, 1.3ft deep. at nearly the S just within the circle (a little bit to the SE in actual fact)

Not very deep, so I would imagine that the post wasn't that high.

Any thoughts as to function?
