I watched the (magnificent) sunrise at the Sanctuary and then drove sown to Avenbury. There were cars parked all over the verges on all approaches, tents piched in the Grand Avenue and amongst the Stones, and the main carpark was full and closed. The police let me though their cones so I could park in the village car park, (I was on a motorbike, so this might have made a difference). The car park was packed with travellers and the whole place had a very friendly and peaceful atmosphere. The only annoying thing was the road to Windmill Hill was closed off by the police so I couldn't get up there to see the crop circle, but there was another one on Wade n Hill that made up for it.
This does seem to in total contadiction to other information given out, pleasantly contradictory.
Hope you all had a great solstice, whatever you got up to.

I would say from experience of living in the area that the best solution would be to park in Marlborough and catch the bus to avebury, its around 6 miles but it does save a lot of hassle, you need to be there by mid afternoon to have any chance of parking etc, we arent going until 7 pm but we have arranged somewhere to park with a friend still reckon it will take an hour rather than the ususal 10 mins`

I went to Avebury for late afternoon and sundown a couple of years ago. Parked what seemed to be totally legally not a million miles from the circles on the road to Beckhampton. Upon arrival back at my car about 10:30, found that Plod had been out and put down no parking bollards all along the road, and ticketed all the cars parked there.
They really do know how to endear themselves to the population.

Hi All
I have just got off the phone after speaking to both Avebury National Trust
management and National Trust Head Office.
It would appear that the wording on the website is not quite a true
reflection of the situation! The wording is meant to warn casual tourists
that they will not find any parking spaces in Avebury this coming weekend.
I pointed out that the wording gives the impression that Avebury is
effectively closed for the solstice and that this is not going down to well
with lots of people who visit regularly at this time of year - they are
looking at rephrasing! The main car-park is NOT going to be closed at all -
NT expect that by Thursday it will be a case of counting one out before
letting one in. They already have quite a few in the car-park who have
arrived early for the solstice! The yellow lines have been repainted to
make them more visible and to allow for the easy flow of through traffic and
to ensure that emergency vehicles are not restricted. The National Trust
at Avebury have asked me to make it clear that they are not trying to
exclude pagans or those who wish to visit to celebrate the solstice but that
parking is a problem and is always worse at this time of year. No provision
has been made for overflow parking - this is due to not being able to find
anyone locally willing to open up a field for such a use apparently!! (what
no bread head land owners making extra money
We did discuss some ideas such as opening up extra parking for a small fee
with a time limit of say 24hrs as a condition of parking. This will be
looked at for next year but its too late for this one.....
Still think the whole thing is a bit daft myself but that's the situation as
stands. Hope everyone has a good solstice wherever they spend it and
perhaps see some of you at Rollright.
Karin
PS please feel free to pass this one to anyone interested

Adam,
if you email me at hungryjedi@yahoo.com, I'll tell you where you can find a campsite (about 3 or 4 miles away - less if you go across country) Nice walk though, especially at dawn/dusk and there's a pub. Again, it gets pretty full on the solstice, so you'd need to get there early!
Cheers

> From the National Trust website:
"The main visitor car park to Avebury will be closed from Thursday 19th to Sunday 22nd June 2003 due to the large number of Solstice Visitors. No alternative car park is available. Public transport will be running as normal, for information on bus services please call 08457 090899."
Yellow lines have been painted on the roads and barriers erected on the verges.
So, you`ll find it difficult to park your car anywhere near Avebury over this solstice weekend.

> From: "littlestone" If you're planning to drive into Avebury and park there for the solstice try to get there very early. Last year it took me about half an hour to drive from the Avebury Garage to the Red Lion! That was about 4pm and there was nowhere to park in Avebury once you got there. The police later closed the roads into the village.
