I find that picture of Carromore 53 quite moving.
Made by our 460x Gt grandparents... and quite probably they were just like us - recited poetry, told jokes, grumbled about the weather and wondered what it was all about.

That is interesting, Jimit. It would be contemporary with the fantastic Neolithic town of Catal Huyuk in Anatolia, now thought to have commenced around 7000 BC. Do we have a photo of Carromore 53? If the date of 7300 BC is confirmed, then that would be about 1000 years before Britain became an island and much of the Irish Sea would have been dry land also.

The dates for western megalithic monuments keep being pushed further into the past. In Julian Cope's book, The Megalithic European P 51, it is said that the mini-dolmen in Ireland known as Carromore 53, is probably the oldest structure in Europe. Radio-carbon dating gives its construction about 7,300 BCE!
When you consider that the last Ice Age had only ended a couple of thousand years before that, it is a remarkable testament to the pioneering spirit of those early people.

Not quite, Mr Anonymous. I support your main argument - we certainly were not hairy savages living in caves and saying "Ugh!"-

Civilisation and the earliest alphabet is generally thought to have started in Mesopotamia around 5000 BC. Also independently in the Indus valley and in China. Our earliest megalithic tombs date from 4500 BC. Stone circles were being constructed from about 3200-1500BC and New Grange (Isle of Lewis) is about the same age as the pyramids (3,100 BC)

The Ogham alphabet is not prehistoric at all. It was developed in southern Ireland around the 3rd century AD. Not aware of it having traveled to Italy, but there are carvings of runes on statues in Venice - they are Viking graffitii - sort of message saying "Thorgrim was here!" They are even later 7th - 11th century AD. Latin letters and runic symbols were both based on the Greek alphabet which came along much later than that of Crete and Egypt.

This has to be changed. Since Newgrange and the Isle of Lewis stones pre-date anything similar in Egypt, then I'd say that during the last few ice ages, civilization started in Ireland-Britain, warmed by the Gulf Stream, and spread East and South.

You could say that the Britons brought written language to Italy as the earliest Ogham is 800 bc in north Italy, thus forming the foundation of Latin.

That should get the bankers in a tizzy.
