The project’s aim is simple... to provide a platform that allows the sharing of lithic tools & associated prehistoric artefacts from around the world. And in doing so, create an unprecedented & comprehensive resource to aid study in this field.
The project helps safeguard the known provenance of lithics, ensuring that this valuable data remains protected, even if ownership changes. Societies, organisations, museums & private collectors may all contribute to the database by uploading images & details. Thus providing public access to items that may otherwise have been unavailable for study.
As the project grows, the database will provide many research opportunities within many aspects of human prehistory. For example, comparing similarities between larger samples of lithics can identify possible trade patterns and the transfer of knowledge between Peoples.
Of course, the accuracy of a given provenance for contributed lithics cannot always be guaranteed, so a rating system has been introduced to indicate the reliability of the details provided. These will be indicated as Known, Most Probable & Unknown. Please see the Database menu for more details.
We also hope that the project will pool the expertise of members wishing to contribute knowledge of their specific areas.
Downloading The Lithic Share Project App to your smartphone or tablet, will provide a valuable resource & also help to fund the project. The app is reasonably priced & while it is not obligatory, your support is appreciated.
