Hi Sem

Hope you are well
Yes I remember you telling me this and I can confirm it as I checked next time I went to the circle.. I also noticed whilst there the two outer stones north of the circle seem to frame the area of Bluestone country where many believe the stones were removed from. Its down to the individual if they believe in that of course but its a coincidence all the same and anyone can go and check this for themselves..

All the best

Hugh

Hi Hugh
Can't remember if I told you this when we walked there, but the Carn Arthur stone is on the horizon when viewed from Gors Fawr circle. It is also at magnetic North from here, which can be checked on an OS Map. Neither makes it a man-placed stone but if not it could have been used as a marker of some sort when erecting the circle.
I've also found magnetic North cropping up on a number occasions which here is about 3deg added to true North. Not sure what magN was in the Neolithic (can anyone help here?) but someone seems to have been aware of it.
Best wishes
Sem

During one of my recent walks on Preseli...(I can tell you it was rather parky to begin with )

I stopped at Carn Bica to get a bite to eat and drink and decided to have a look to see if Carn Arthur was visible from there...To my amazement I found this...

I was surprised to find the entire Carn Arthur tor hidden below the curve of the hill except the famous stone itself. I have no idea the consequences for this or if it may have some significance to alignments etc... Any speculation on this is very welcome

All the very best

Hugh

Fascinating series of images & ideas, thanks Hugh.
Give us a yell if you need any 'markers' for any shots - & did I ever send you details of the Photographers Ephemeris for the alignments & timings? Certainly meant to after our walk with sem, but age may have intervened!

Well hello there!!

Hope you are well

Yes you did tell of this excellent site and it has had me entertained on many occasions,so thank you for that. Thoroughly enjoyed the walk that day, unfortunately the weather has intervened since and i have only been able to get up there on few occasions.

There are lots of theories concerning this wonderful balancing boulder .
I have read it points towards the Bluestones,I can confirm it does not.

I have been told it rocks, erm dont think so its in a VERY precarious position ,I have stood next to it,sat on it and looked around ,it does not rock..I certainly would not like to give it a try given its position or be held responsible for toppling it over...

On though the day I approached it from Craig Talfynnydd my gaze was continually being diverted to "alignments " and features that seemed to go together...
If you enlarge the image below you will see where this may be heading look at the features along the ridge ,I have to say when you see this in person it certainly gets your imagination working...

As you approach from this direction ONE alignment keeps taking your gaze, that is Carn Arthur stone and the VERY prominent upright stone on top of Carn Gwr...

This is an artists dream,I could have a lot of fun with this....

However ,as I got closer I began to see the "shape" of the Carn Arthur stone means its axis appears to be pointing somewhere else

So I got up close to it and checked along BOTH sides

AND

Its VERY EASY for this stone to fill your sky when you are up close to it...

To my surprise its axis appears to be pointing here

Its not the first time I have noticed this Tor and its relationship with some other features nearby...I checked my compass and the bearing is that of the mid Summer sunrise....

It was then I decided to look back in the opposite direction...and saw this on the hillside...

Even if i am way off with this,I am convinced there is something about the prominent upright on Carn Gwr that needs further investigation,I was hoping my little bit of detective work was going to lead to that upright . Even if I am wrong here at least we can all see now which way this famous stone on Carn Arthur is pointing...

all the very best

Hugh
