Micheal -

I'm sorry Feanor felt the need to trash a city that he doesn't like, to no purpose. I've enjoyed two separate trips to New Orleans and I hope you do the same.

There actually are many coastal Indian mounds in Louisiana, but many of the low lying ones are shell midden sites (village), as opposed to more imposing earthen mounds and earthworks in Northeast Louisiana.

The only sites I'm aware of in Orleans Parish are "Big Oak - Little Oak Islands" shell middens which are along a previously existing shore line of Lake Pontchartrain and date back ~2000 years. They are within the current boundaries of the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlike Refuge, directly north east of the city. However, the site is not, I believe, easily accessible. There were several other shell midden sites on the north side of the Lake, but I believe most of them were completely excavated in the 1930's or washed away.

As David points out you have the twin mounds on the university campus in Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge also has the State Museum which is supposed to have a collection of Indian artifacts and art, but I don't know how much of it is prehistoric.

Farther away, there are the earthworks and mounds of Marksville.

I'll see if I can't find some more before your trip.
You also might consider mound sites in Mississippi, although we don't have any listed on the portal that are closer than the Natchez area. So, al lot of this depends on how much spare time you'll have.

And the thread has moved here: N.O - B.R..

I had a great time in New Orleans once, at the 46th World Science Fiction Convention.

The Natives of the southern Mississippi River fished and hunted at the Delta, but no doubt felt that building villages or burial mounds on land situated below sea-level was probably not a good idea.

It took "White Men" to build on a swampy flood-plain.

Enjoy your stay in the horrible, dirty, malodorous, corrupt, violent, crime-ridden arm-pit of a hell-hole called Naw-lins ...
But you'll only find Native Monuments much more sensibly placed farther to the north and northwest.
