I'd agree with that Andy - can always easily open up an OS or similar map using one of the many the icon links at the top of the page.
But unfortunately for me now, here in the office, neither map works! - no doubt all to do with firewalls etc - I'm lucky they even let me gat the basic portal for a short while at lunchtime.

I've got the nearby sites map working. This has meant running two different versions of the map script on the page, the other one being for the OS map.
Unfortunately this has brought back the various problems we had with the OS map where the scrolling and zooming doesn't work. I don't have a fix for this at the moment but at least the nearby sites map works which I think is the more important one to be able to pan and zoom.

I've just found that the nearby sites map doesn't work for UK sites on my computer (Windows 7, Firefox).

Of course, universities use MacroHard products, so trying to find sites nearby, when relying on place names from County Gazetteers significantly difficult. I'm stumped by one near Liphook Station. Must find the Grinsell and HER locations.

Same here Sunny and Coin, I wasn't sure if it was just me. I've not changed anything.
The Nearby Sites maps still work outside the UK, eg

Which is probably because they use a slightly different map version. I'll look into it. Thanks.

The nearby sites maps work on my pc and I have Windows IX7. Could it be something to do with plug-ins or cookies ??

I apologise for my late reply,
I have been using Internet explorer on pc, although I do believe it does work on it. However the map has now stopped working on my tablet. I have tried using different user agents in my browser (safari, opera, Firefox, IE) and it has worked on none of these, even though it worked before.

As you suspected Andy, neither of the 2 maps seem to work properly in IE, even though they are fine in Firefox.
I can't offer to help on the technical solution, but there is a temporary work-around in the form of the 'pop-up a Google Map of these sites' option for which there is a link just below where the other maps should be.
This seems to work in both Firefox and IE - it gives the list & location of nearby sites from the Portal. It is not as useful as the normal map as you don't get the differentiation of portal icons for each type of site, but it is definitely better than nothing.....pending someone being able to help you with a longer term fix.

Hello Coin, thanks for reporting the fault - I would guess this is because you're using Internet Exporer (could you confirm this?) Assuming so:
The nearby sites map is a 'plug in' app that I have grafted in to the pages, and it has been very complex to set up. I've not found a clear reason why it doesn't work in IE and I don't have the specialist knowledge to debug what it might be.
Is there anyone using IE for whom the nearby sites map does work as that might give an important clue?
In the meantime it does work on Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome and the smartphones I have tried so if you're in the position to, that's the immediate solution. I know some poor b*****s are still forced to use IE at work, for which you have my condolences 
If there are any GIS or PHP experts out there who would like to contribute some time or thoughts to our project I would be delighted to hear from you as my effort is spread very thin with all the various things on the site I have to support!
