Hi Tom

did you take a look at the avenue and Silbury hill.

Briefly walked along the Avenue and then took a trip to Silbury: Trouble is that you're not allowed to walk up it so I couldn't take a proper look at the things that interest me about it.

We did go to the local pub but the kids are on a gluten free diet so we mosied off elsewhere after checking with the landlord. Will do if in the Avebury area again: would be nice to meet up. Some of the family still live in the area.

All the best

Jon,

Yes thats a strange one, for reasons of safety (it may collapse again). All the signs say that anyway but round the back there is a well trodden path as well as a stye allowing access over the fence. Great views from the top. There is also Marlborough mound at the college grounds within Marlborough, which has easier access, they are currently restoring it.

Best wishes

Hi Rune

Will do. I'm on the borders of SE water and Southern. Just discovered that my water supply is by SE, so we're still in drought and could do with finding new supplies. Trouble is that you're not allowed to put in boreholes in aquifer areas.

Might give it another go if it stops raining here!

I finally got to Avebury (passing through coming back from Wales)

Really enjoyed the place, My wife bought me a couple of dowsing rods (following your suggestion) and I completely failed to do anything proper with them. Though if you angle them right, you can use them as a 'child hiding behind stones finder' which proved to be a source of amazement to my kids.

Jon,

Great, I can always sense when Im in Wiltshire, its so open and relaxing great for stress soothing, did you take a look at the avenue and Silbury hill.

With dowsing, I actually gave up several times before deciding to keep it going, I mean every logical thought was telling me what a waste of time. I did keep at it following witnessing it and wondered enough to give it a go, eventually it worked - when I stopped trying so hard incidently.

Even after I got movement, I still didnt believe it worked and spent a stupid amount of time testing it, quite bizarre to everyone else.

If you are ever in the area again, let me know as It would be good to have a coffee / chat / pint (did you eat at the pub?), and if you wish some dowsing. The same goes for anyone on the forum.

Best wishes

Hey Tom

Good to see you back. Can't say I have much to contribute to this either though I think there's a great case for saying they were probably connected to agriculture.

In Scandinavia, there are some topographic names which begin with "Fal-" as Falster, Falbygden, Falun, etc. ("Fal" had meaning of a flat landscape here) But at Tara, there was also a phallus-stone which seemed to be a center of "Fal". So I`ve begun to recall all cases where I`ve seen a menhir (phallus-stone?) in the middle of a field and there were quite a lot of them. Here in Sweden we have also another version that contains some gravestones in the middle of a field, instead of a solitary monolith. Such a group is called here "ättehage", which means "enclosure of ancestors".

Have you noticed some similar features within landscapes of your homelands? It seems that establishing a field was quite a complicated enterprise in the symbolical sphere. And without a fertility stone (possibly containing ancestor spirits) at some meaningful spot within it, a field would probably not "work" properly, or what?

I know; it`s far away from large sanctuaries like Stonehenge or Avebury to those solitary monoliths in some small fields. Anyway; those are survivals of megalithic footfolk`s beliefs, which imo are worth pondering.

Vlad,

I cannot contribute with evidence unfortunatly, but there are many megaliths today in fields e.t.c, I wouldnt know the start of how to detirmine whether in the times of the structures whether there is a link with agriculture to megaliths e.t.c

Quite often a stone circle will have a dolman attached with the site, i.e Blind fiddler, Meg e.t.c . Speaking speculativley often these can resemble alignments with solar, possible lunar events as well as possible lines of sight which may have been relevant at the time. They quite often have folklore attached with them also.

Personally I think The link between agriculture and megaliths is a logical one, in what respect I am not sure whether it be purely to help scare away the pests, or whether as you ascribe guarding the crops by use of spirts / anscestors. I think In many cases dolmans are often the part of larger structures, so I think the purpose stretches beyond this alone.

Best wishes
