It was almost certainly a painting or print. My recollection is unfortunately confounded with that Led Zeppelin sleeve image of the Giants' Causeway, so can't reliably identify the style. It could have been an illustration for a story in Omni or Quest/81 magazine.

WoW!
You're really dating yourself!
I read Omni voraciously back then. Great art work.
Wish I could be of more assistance.

I feel certain I have seen this painting. Is it done in a fantasy realism style - a bit like René Magritte?

For many years I have been trying to find a copy of
an iconic image I remember from my youth: a large,
mossy, rounded boulder, with a spring and shallow
pool in the top roomy enough for several to sit
around, draining via four channels cut in the cardinal
directions.
It could have been a photograph or painting,
possibly a record album or book cover. It might have
been meant to represent the common source of the four
rivers of medieval legend (Nile, Danube, etc), or the
fountain of youth.
Does this ring a bell to anyone?
Many thanks
Nathan
