A terribly silly question, perhaps, but... There are "mounds" marked on the OS map near Ward's Stone in Forest of Bowland. I've been walking there last year, and they look like heaps of peaty soil on an otherwise flat-ish plateau, covered in moorland vegetation from the top, but in various stages of erosion round the sides (which is how I know about the peaty stuff). The height varies, but I'd say up to two meters? Overall about ten of them, I can't remember for sure.
Does anyone know anything about them? Are they natural, or could they be man-made? The soil they contain doesn't seem to be the same as what's around them. There are no ditches around them either, at least not that I could see.
Any info would be much appreciated
