There are two faces on stone 27
Top left corner looking at 28 you have a female face on the top left quarter of the overhang with hair flowing down and round to the left then back to the right.
When you get your eye in there is a smaller, frightened looking, face on the top right temple of the large face.

Regards
Jim

Here's a nice view of Stones 28 & 27 together.

It is thought that Stone 28 was placed first, followed by 27.

Millions of people who see it say S-28 has a 'face' ― a brooding somber visage, peering from under a thick, thoughtful brow. Indeed the left hand of the 'brow' appears to have been carefully worked to this end.

There is the implication of a nose, which is cut transversely by a natural fissure in the Stone. Several people have suggested that it may once have been complete, but was shattered by Medieval Christians who hoped to lock those pesky Evil Spirits inside! (A popular practice in those times.)
There is a stern, down turned mouth ― an abject frown ― which to us may indicate displeasure.
Perhaps he was intended to be a Guardian of the Citadel ...?

"Keep Out, you crazy American running pig-dogs!"

To me at least, the shaping-work in the top of the Stone recall a Rapa Nui Aku ― though there can be no association in reality as Stonehenge is far too old.

It has been said that a personified S-28 lends credence to the concept that all the Stones in the Circle represent either individual or perhaps a collective of Ancestors; a notion that has some hefty backing these days.

S-27 has been considered either an emulation of its older brother, or perhaps a female counterpart, as it presents softer, flowing features. The rough/smooth aspect of the 5 Trilithons lend some support to the idea that the Stones were paired.

That no other Stones resemble these two reinforces the thinking that each may have been raised by a single generation, so by the time 26, 25 and so on got erected, their great great granddaddy's goofy idea had been abandoned.

Yet another of the Great Henge's eternal mysteries to which we may never know the answer.

(But it sure does look like a face!)

Neil

Does anyone know if there has been any reason given for the shape of the top of these two stones as far as compared to the ones that are still standing?
