Also, see this story we re-printed in the Portal in Oct 2009:
Apolinario Chile Pixtun is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly "running out" on Dec. 21, 2012. [The] Mayan Indian elder insists. "I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff."
"Plastic shaman" could apply to a lot of wannabe wise men and women - I can think of a few "druids"...

The new-agers are an eclectic lot, they appear to cherry pick ideas from wherever they like. There appears to be quite a lot of Hopi prophesy stuff mixed in with the Mayan calendar 2012 theories.
I hadn't heard the term "plastic shaman" before, sounds right.

Nice one BareClawz
About time someone laid that piece of rubbish to rest!
BUT.. my diary-book has just lost all it's pages after Sept 21st 2012. Does that mean my/the world ends then or should I just assume the binding is crap?
Yours sincerely
Worried from South Wales.

I'm glad too, but for other reasons.
Speaking to one of the admins they mentioned they'd wondered about my forum name and thought it had Native American connections. They were right, my great grandmother was a full blood Iroquois, Oneida.
Having announced that part I can also mention I was a member of a group that exposed people who made false claims about their heritage or ripped people off by selling Native American ceremony or charging to teach, often false, Native teachings. Plastic shamen we called them. Also I am a member of a group called AIM, I don't mean AOL Instant Messenger either, but American Indian Movement. They have quite a history in the US for defending the rights of the Natives. But back to the point, a couple of years ago there were all sorts of individuals and groups and people claiming the doom prophecy of the Mayan calender. But on the anti plastic shamen group there was a large section devoted to trying to persuade people these were just doom merchants and highlighting other groups also working to calm people down.
There is still a large amount of people advocating the doom prophecy part saying that there are going to be mass suicides towards the end of the year and that next year will be chaotic as so many acted as if the world would end this year.
For F***s sake all it has been was that 2012 is the end of a Mayan cycle and 600 years ago they knew they had 600 years to work out the next cycle and till now nobody had found anything that said differently.
Kicks soap box back under desk and goes and sticks head in fridge to calm down

Apparently the latest finds show that the Mayan calendar goes 7000 years into the future. I guess that puts an end to the 2012 doomsday theories!
I don't know exactly where the site is ("40km north-east of Tikal") and very close to the site of San Bartolo (also of unknown location). Any help in pinpointing where these sites are would be appreciated.
