Yes that's a good point on the grouped categories (I could be pretentious and call them meta-categories). Stone circles could be under a general ring cairns group as well as a wider standing stones one.

We did have category descriptions buried in the site but they have become lost over time and could do with going on one page. Another good suggestion.

some site types may fit into more than one overall category, such as Ring/Kerb Cairns which some people list as Stone Circles.

probably a separate issue but I think it would be great if there was a glossary with the site types so everyone can see a brief explanation of what these site types are - it could even be expanded to give the best site examples to visit.

Andy, with your comment "... yes I've been thinking where best to link from - could put right at the top of the front page near where the maps are...' in mind, I looked again at the drop-down choice under the 'Find a site' tab - is there any way of having the general search option first, and perhaps emboldened so that is where most people would go,

and then have the choice of placename, postcode/zip etc as the first box, rather than being a link within text? The browse by country/type would then be just options within the search, rather than meriting a separate line in the drop-down..

The choice then from the drop-down is to do a map search (world etc), a non-map search or one of the Galleries..hope this makes sense...!

Actually I've had a rethink on that and will have a go at adding filtering by 'overall' categories - eg 'all standing stones' - 'all earthworks' - 'all cairns' - 'all Christan sites' etc. These need to be defined - I will have a think.l

Currently linked from the main search page http://www.megalithic.co.uk/search.php but yes I've been thinking where best to link from - could put right at the top of the front page near where the maps are.

I think I'll also add a 'nearby site by site type' but it will have to be limited to (for example) 'just stone circles' rather than multi categories.

Andy - are you adding a link to these search extras to the 'find a site' drop-down menu?

It worked fine when I used the link in your forum post, but I'm not sure how to replicate the sequence from home page?

Thanks for these additions Andy - I have been tending to go to MemoryMap or Google Earth etc to pick up a map reference to use in the Portal search box, and that was a bit of a pain.

I will try a few postcodes out & report back....but I think it will be well worth doing,

That's brilliant Andy.

Every time I visit someone, I'll type their postcode in and see what sites are nearby.

I have created two new location searchers based on an idea from Ann-Marie who contacted me. Firstly to search by place name:

http://www.megalithic.co.uk/searchtown.php

Follow the instructions on the page, then click "Find Nearest"

That will take you to the closest ancient site in our database. Look down that page for nearby sites in the area or go back to the search page to try again.

I have also made one you can use if you know the post code / zip code of where you are

http://www.megalithic.co.uk/searchpostcode.php

This works worldwide, thanks to the GeoNames database - unlike the one built in to the main search box which only works for the UK, US and Germany.

Please let me know how you get on with these new features in case there are any problems I haven't spotted.

Cheers
Andy
