What I can't find is the "3000" year old step well in Gujarat. The world heritage link in the anonomous message is to the Buddist temples of Patan, Napal. (None of which are 3000 years old.)

*I did find something saying there were 3000 step wells in western India* Maybe the message was garbled.

It was mentioned in the Stones forum in 2007, but the link there doesn't work for me. http://www.megalithic.co.uk/modules.php?op=modload&name=Forum&file=viewtopic&topic=4671&forum=1

It was constructed for the purpose of water storage.

Gujarat [has many step wells;] step wells are unique heritage of gujarat.

You will never find step wells in any other state of india.

Visit this world heritage through this link : world heritage.

Step wells are a practical and often beatuiful method of maintaining and accessing a water resouce. A trench or pit is dug to the water source (the water table, spring, or underground stream) and a stone lining built that includes both passageways for cleaning and maintaining the water source, and ranks of stairways reaching to the water level. Often a roof is erected over the step well in order to help prevent evaporation and keep the well clean. The structure also provides a cool and refreshing location for the women of the community (the typical water bearers) to congregate and socialize.

I've been unable to immediately find the ancient step well aluded to in the post. According to Philip Davies (The Penguin guide to the monuments of India.) The primary era of step well construction is from 1200 AD through 1700 AD. However, there is evidence that some water structures at Mohenjo-daro are early versions of step wells.
