Not so sure they'll give up that easily George:
The nature of the pits is uncertain at this time though the existence of timber or stone settings associated with the pits cannot be discounted. The position of the western pit below a near horizon, and therefore not directly visible from Stonehenge, also suggests that visual aids such as fire or smoke would have been required to identify this point for viewers at the Heel Stone.
They seem rather fixated on the concept of getting solstice alignments to work at Stonehenge. In the proposed ceremony, one would presumably have waited until the wind died down before lighting the fire. Given its location, this would therefore have been an exceptionally long wait and this probably accounts for the snail's pace at which the proposed procession was said by these researchers to be moving?
Better stop before witty comment turns into outright sarcasm. I'm starting to doubt that we'll ever see location data for the pits.
Nice to see you back George!

Considering the amount of reasoned input we all had on this thread, their lack of 'findings' doesn't surprise.
btw - good to see you George!

Latest update .
Scroll down to find the article .
http://www.prehistoricsociety.org/publications/publication/past_71_july_2012/
It now seems that the snail paced “procession “ and the mistaken calculation of the midway point being aligned on the Heelstone at the solstice has been quietly forgotten . The unexcavated ,undated , and in one case unsighted pits , inaccurately calculated to be aligned on the solstices now only “appear “ to be aligned . A further eight months might see that put to bed too .

They got plenty publicity , the criticism wasn't picked up on , maybe that is all that matters and we won't hear any more just like so many other trumpeted ideas that have no content . The pits may exist but the the astro , spatial and procession ideas are fantasy ,maybe they realise that now .

Hi Neil
That's the one. There used to be high definition pictures on Mike Pitt's website. The problem is finding the exact coordinates from the pictures.
For example, if you overlay a known building into Google Earth or Bing's version, you'll find that there is a slight rotational difference between Google and Bing (about half a degree from memory). From memory, I think that GE is more accurate rotationally but that might not be the case for satellite pictures taken in the Stonehenge area. When trying to overlay this type of image into a CAD processor, it's not possible to verify true North (the image given also appears to be slightly rotated so does not appear to have true North at the top).
So without having a reference on-plan image in which North is known to be accurate, it's not possible to import this image to identify the angles precisely. One alternative way is to survey the site using the pictures as location references and to then grid that back to local OBMs, but it would be a lot easier if Birmingham had released the survey data on which they had made their claims.
Cheers

Hi Neil
I've got the images stored somewhere but no way of getting accurate data on the precise co-ordinates. I'm thinking that they're unlikely to want to publish much more information on this because of the interpretation mistakes. I have a theory but it relies on having a certain angle relative to East (about 5.25 degrees anti-clockwise from memory.. but it's a while since I looked at it.)
Trouble with this one is that there's not much in the way of evidence other than what else would be predicted to exist, so it's not worth a great deal of effort.
All the best

My understanding (or memory) is, that when all this falderall broke, Mike Pitts had a map on his site showing the locations of the 2 fire-pits.
I don't have the GPS data, but the one on the west side was quite near (several hundred feet) the terminal inner side of the north ditch, while the one on the east was not as near the termination, (some thousand or so feet) but still on the inner side of the north ditch, closer to the center.
The eastern pit was reported to be somewhat larger than the western one.
Perhaps George has better info.
