I respect the hill always, but cannot comply to the rules as set by others, sorry.
I needed to check something there and then, not when the moon had slid away.
Did the origonal builders have to have permission of Amanda??
I will take a gander , and ask the hill.
I think it will reply.

Who do you ask..?... English Heritage or the National Trust?
Is there any place you can go to do this at Avebury, like the visitor centre?
(Presumably you need to book in advance, and is there a charge?)
Hoping to go up that way with a friend in June, so it's an exciting prospect!

The view isn't as good as you would think as it is below the level of surrounding hills.
only WKLB looks good. Avebury and the Avenues are almost completely hidden.

There's an ancient road called Icknield Way, aka tin port, that connects Stone Henge to the Grimes Graves (aka Grim's quarry)

Kevin - like you, I'd love to be able to walk up on Silbury Hill one day, but I guess if it's opened to the public, access would have to be managed to some extent to prevent too much erosion.
(Also I'd want to know for sure that big hole was properly plugged in the top!) 
How many reading this have ever stood on top of Silbury, I wonder?? Be nice to hear their memories.

I'd added this really quickly while watching it, for the benefit of anyone who was online on Sunday morning.
However, it is available on BBC iPlayer, I think. Have found this link:

Not sure how long available, but well worth watching.
This might whet your appetites:
It starts with a brief look at Stonehenge and Avebury, then the presenter, Helen Skelton, climbs Silbury Hill with Jim Leary. There's film [or photos?] of the tunnels of the last excavation, and old photos of previous ones, and Jim explains what the hill means to him, and gives his 'take' on why the mysterious mound is there.
This is followed by an excerpt from Tom Fort's excellent previously-aired prog about the A303, showing all the section on Stonehenge, with interesting old re-erection-of-stones pictures and footage, as well as current footage, and an interview with the MP who discussed the plans for the area with Maggie Thatcher!
Next are sections on chalk landscape, and horticulture (medlars) -[or is there a word 'arboriculture' I should use?!], at or near Wroughton, then it's on to Devizes and Caen Locks, with amazing old pics of the sadly overgrown 'staircase' before it was restored.
Next it's to Malmesbury Abbey Gardens and the naturist gardeners, even the [male] presenter strips off! (*Down* boys!.. and you thought it would be Helen!... I dunno!)
Where's Rune and her whip!! ha!ha! 
After this, Tisbury, fighting the weeds and other 'alien' plants.
For lovers of Crop Circles, there's a largish section on aerial views of many of these, which seems to have been shot in 2009 with Julia .... [oh, dear, I've forgotten her name!) I did see the Alton Barnes Horse in some shots.
It ends at Salisbury, with a new craze, 'slacklining'.
