For sunrise and sunset times I use this web based app from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration

the Photographers Ephemeris (uses google maps) is used to predict or look back at sun and moon rise/set positions and where it is at times in between. but it does not do the stars.

For use on pc it is free, otherversions for iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch and Android have to be paid for.

As a very basic test why not set it up for sun set as seen from your house tomorrow , if that works push it a bit more choosing a horizon that is a higher etc .
What will happen when it gets better is that there will be a huge volume of reports from GE ers just like archaeoastronomers have always done suggesting x alignment is only a few days off solstice etc . Great , democritisation of info and taking away some of the perceived "difficulty " of the subject . The real problem and difficulty is not finding alignments which are everywhere (if you look close enough i.e. local standing stone when aligned with prominent hill had Orion setting behind it on Xmas 1500 BC , should we tell the Bishop ?) but , intentionality , maybe there will be an app for that too .

Is there even a way that this can be done fairly roughly on Google Earth as a workaround? Just for purely spectulation until you go to site and observe?

Given that GE altitudes are inaccurate and we don't know the accuracy of the other components ,it may be wee while yet before we have that particular app working well enough to celebrate , but it's only a matter of time .

Ive been looking at this, and it shows the position of the stars but doesnt really seem to show the actual sun setting or rising? Am I missing something because it would be an amazing tool of figuring out possible alignments from sites.

Thanks

Yup, exactly. Given I had cloud for every solstice alignment I wanted to check out this year, it's been a real pain!

Hello Tim, it's built into the latest versions of Google Earth. There's a time adjustment setting somewhere that you turn it on with.
Cheers

Hi folks

Anyone familiar with a google earth app which allows you to see sun, moon, stars locations et al from a given point on a given date?

Andy B mentioned it at the event at Dove Holes, but as I was giving a tour of the henge at the time, I missed it.

Need it for some research!

Cheers

Tim
