Also fun to rummage through are the ethnological reports to the Smithsonian from the 1800's. This link is to the 1890-1891 edition, with info on mounds and stone graves, etc. You can navigate by the table of contents, clicking on the page listed. I have only looked at a little of that one, and none of the other years they have, which I'm sure are also of interest. Just found out about it this evening.

The Museum of the Cherokee Indian has a very useful catalog search function that can be used to examine photos in their collection of ancient sites, artifacts, and ethnographic information. Their library and archive records are also on line as summaries for researchers. Researchers may request an appointment to examine the records. See: webpage for collections and archives.
