Thanks to some people who have been testing this:
>Strangely, it must think I am in London, but I didn't have to put any location detail in.
Your PC doesn't have a GPS, that's based on where your ISP is says it is. Mine correctly works it out to the right town
>Secondly, I tried it on my mobile, and it accurately placed me and identified the nearest portal-listed site. What I realised is the fact that the nearest site is less useful than the fact that the site page gives ready access to the list of other nearby ones.
Yes that's the idea
>In case anyone worries about the issue of the portal holding details of there location, perhaps it could be arranged that the information is held only for the duration of the session - so that, when they log off, it is not kept so that the Portal cannot be said to be holding personal information about individuals' whereabouts?
The Portal doesn't store any data on this, your GPS tells your web browser where it is, and your web browser asks the portal for a page based on your long/lat location. Only the normal information associated with a page is stored
>I think I would use this facility most when out & about in the car, where I am using a laptop - hopefully with my dongle if I can ever get it to work properly! The reason for that is the fact that I find the mobile's screen just too small to be able to use for this sort of activity, and the battery simply wouldn't last if I kept the screen active for long enough to make a note of the location and Grid Ref of sites listed as being nearby.
Unfortunately that wouldn't work, it needs the GPS in the phone to get your location. (although it might be able to work something out from which mobile cell you are connected to, it'll be interesting to see)
Thanks for giving it a go,
Andy

Thanks for the feedback on the dropdown menus for mobile use. I didn't think it would be ideal but that's what we have for now. I will think about how to do a menu that works on more devices, and fits on screen better but it's tricky because there are so many options to fit in.

I've added a geolocation feature to allow your mobile device to tell us your location (with your permission of course)
Just go to
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/gl.html
or indeed
http://m.megalithic.co.uk/gl.html
and it will ask for your location and redirect you to the closest site in our database to where you are.
Bookmark this page and it will always look up from wherever you now are
I have linked this page from the login page for the mobile version so it's easily accessible

One further item you might want to look at Andy...
virtually all the content stays nicely on my mobile screen when held in landscape mode, but the top menu choices extend way beyond the rest of the page content. 'Shop', 'About us' and 'Edit settings' are off-screen, even in this wider view. 'Forum' fits nicely - the others are out of sight....and therefore cease to exist!

"Yes there is "mouseover" on mobiles. On my Nokia N95 I can move the cursor over (say) 'Latest Entries' to reveal the dropdown menu, when I move the cursor away the menu disappears."
I think it depends on the mobile - my new HTC Desire doesn't have a cursor, and I have found that the drop-down menus are not effective either.
When the menu drops down, there is no way for me to select an item - I tried using the 'optical trackball' (now that I know what & where it is!) to go down the menu, but it obviously can't 'see' the menu choices as it goes instead to whatever link is hidden underneath on the page itself.
The phone does have the ability (via its menu button) to allow 'back' and 'forward' between screens, but this doesn't cover the problem Kelpie described - getting rid of a menu etc.

Andy,
having just changed from a mobile which didn't even have a camera to a new model, I have tried getting to the Portal using the m.megalithic.co.uk route.
One thing I noticed - you mention: "The first time you use this you will need to enter your ID and password". In fact, as the lefthand options are not present, the login option doesn't appear either. Neither is there a login option along the top menu choices.
I tried going into a forum which I knew to be members only, and that prompted me to open or log in, so achieved it that way. I had thought that the 'Join in' option might be a route to logging in, but that didn't do what I expected.
So...my first suggestion - you may need to replicate the normal log-in box somewhere more accessible. Good fun though!

You can now access the mobile version of the Megalithic Portal without changing your theme.
The link to is http://m.megalithic.co.uk
(you just need to enter m.megalithic.co.uk on your mobile device / netbook etc)
All the content is the same but has the left side bar removed so the site will load faster and be better on smaller screens.
The first time you use this you will need to enter your ID and password. After that it should remember who you are. Bookmark http://m.megalithic.co.uk to come back and use it again.
Any problems or if anyone needs help with their password please let me know.
eg If any of our content is overloading or upsetting your device let me know and we can look at simplifying the pages on the mobile version

Yes there is "mouseover" on mobiles. On my Nokia N95 I can move the cursor over (say) 'Latest Entries' to reveal the dropdown menu, when I move the cursor away the menu disappears.
Here's how it works in Safari on my Mac: mouse-over and the dropdown menu appears, move cursor away ("mouse-away"?!!) and the menu disappears, there is no need to click elsewhere on the screen.
Very glad to hear you are moving towards a mobile-friendly Portal. My megalith hunting all revolves around my phone because it has GPS +
OS map, camera with geotagging and internet browser. When out and about I need an answer to the question: "I am at location X, what and where is there to visit nearby?". At present the fastest way for me to do this is to Google the name of a known nearby site to find the relevant Portal webpage, then scroll down to look at the list of Nearby Sites, note the Grid Ref numbers, then search for them on my phone's OS map. (Grid Refs often show up in the Google synopsis in which case I don't have to visit The Portal at all.)
Besides making a "simpler" version of the site, have you considered making a widget (internet-accessing app for a mobile) which, armed with the user's location (as GPS is becoming a common feature on mobiles), would extract local information from the Portal such as Site Name and Map Reference and display it on the phone's mapping system? (This would have sounded like pie in the sky just a few years ago, but just look at what mobiles can do now!)
cheers
Golux

Thanks, so on the mobile there's no equivalent of 'mouseover', it's either clicking on something or not?

That's right, as there is no on-screen pointer it's either tap with your finger or not.
