A few years ago I was in regular contact with Elderford. He told me he got access via a relative. Unfortunately I can't contact him as his E-mail address is no longer in use and a PM went unanswered.
Maybe Andy could put out an APB for him.

Thingy, I don't think the answer was ever going to be anything other than a polite "NO". Things have changed quite a lot with H+S the last few years, so it's not surprising really.
Everyone I talked to at the base were doubtful about access, but I had to see it through to the top man to get it confirmed. I got the impression that this is the last word on it for everyone now.
So, Sunday looks promising sort of. If you're in the area give me a shout, "I'm free" and theres lots to see.

Cerrig, sorry if my separate enquiry might have had a detrimental effect on yours. My perception is that the MOD is pursuing a new policy of denying all access for fear of litigation if anyone is silly enough to pick up a dangerous object. I can understand this, but am disappointed with their lack of understanding.
Never mind, the wider area is full of such treasures and I just need to find enough time to visit some of them.

Thingy, I wondered why Major Mahoney thought I was an ex-serviceman. It seems I had talked to him after your enquiry. He must think I'm a bit pushy, trying twice in the same day. Oh well, plenty of other sites to visit locally.

Coincidentally, I today asked for permission to visit Ynys Hir over the coming Easter weekend, when there is no live firing for four days. I buttered them up with with special range & weapon safety qualifications and promised to behave myself. I said the purpose of the visit was to "...update a photographic collection and site data. My intention is to record the condition of the site and obtain measurements and sightlines not previously recorded. This will be achieved without any disturbance or damage to the site."
I received a curt response saying the area was inaccessible as it is in the impact area, quoting the usual Health & Safety get-out clause - which was probably the same answer Cerrig got.
This suggests a less-helpful attitude that may restrict any future access.

I used to go into the impact area quite regularly to remove tank parts, we used to get assistance from the range officer and arrange for EOD to accompany us ( they treat it as an exercise)
There is usually an half hour talk about not picking anything up and only treading on ground that has already been trafficked.
The key is to try engaging the range officers interest with something like a 'survey'
I know it is not the same but the MOD archaeologists have some very good photos and detailed records of some of these sites and before budget cuts interfere with their jobs some of them might be happy to help with access.

A bit of a blow for the Brecon event this year, but one site definitely off our list is the stone circle on MOD land. Permission cannot be granted due to safety issues, being in the impact area of the live firing range. Even the army don't go there on foot anymore. So Thingy's pictures may well be the last ones ever taken of this site. Never mind, on a brighter note, I have managed to book a sunny day for the 31st, so sunscreen is advisable. 
ps; bring a brolly too, just in case.
