I am a little confused why so many people seem bothered by an apparently impossible bomb detector but not at all concerned over the very efficient and well proven military hardware which is being sold to these people for staggering profit.
Why should we be surprised to see fraud and profiteering in an arena which was created for the financial benefit of Dick Cheney and pals at the cost of tens of thousands of Iraqis?
If we stopped selling them explosives they wouldn't need bomb detectors.

There's a saying we have in the old country ... "Follow the money".
There is speculation in blogs following the ADE device that there are personal connections between the Iraqi's who have ordered the device and the distributors. (Although I've yet to see reputable reports of anyone connecting the dots between buying these things and kickbacks.)
Corruption continues to be a major concern in "developing countries", including Iraq and Thailand.

Someone is making a lot of money on these things, and its not only the people manufacturing them. Distributors, evaluators, commodity buyers, finance departments - the chances for "value added" additions to the price are legion. The Iraqis are apparently buying these things for up to $60,000 each. The guy arrested in the UK this last week was selling them for considerably less.
Yes, someone probably understands that these things are worthless. But their love of money is taking advantage of "believers", even their own countrymen. (Who else are the primary targets of frauds and the corrupt?)
It was ever thus, but this case is just more disgusting than usual.
I'd like to see Jim McCormick charged with negligent homicide for his depraved indifference, along with any of his co-conspirators. Or, send him and his "team" to a mine field with the device and appropriate cards. He deserves to be kept there until he finds them all. Or, just the first one.

This is what's baffling me as well.
Either they have all been deceived by an absolute master of the art, someone more skilled than say Derren Brown, which is highly unlikely, or there are other factors which haven't been made public.
At the moment, the story just doesn't stack up.

thanks Andy, Yes, I see now, I've not had time today yet to read any papers. I'm left speechless by the second report.... it certainly seems like some sort of face-saving exercise.
I'm still at a loss as to how no-one took one to bits to find out how it worked. Even business competitors were sure to get their hands on one, they could have decried it years ago. I can't be the only one here who does that, surely? I can still remember how aghast I was when I took the cover off the computer tower which is about 20 ins high by 7 ins wide by as deep as the desk to find three small fans, acres of empty space and a few small plastic boards with chips and solder on them! But at least I had a product at the other end of it that worked (albeit temperamentally!)
