For those who missed it, a very enjoyable talk albeit on a basic level. Mr Edmonds was at pains to point out that a 5pence piece held at arms length is approx three times the size of the sun when viewed (90 mins arc width as opposed to the sun's 30 mins). To this he added that within 5 days either side of the Solstices the exact postition of the sun varies by 9 mins (ie 1/3 of the sun's width).
Food for thought for archaeo-astronomy.
It was announced at the lecture that on Thurs 11/3/2 Mike Parker-Pearson will be giving a talk on the latest discoveries at Stonehenge. It is NOT shown on Cardiff Archaeological Society's website http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/hisar/newsandevents/events/archsociety/index.html
This shows an AGM.
They have apparently reserved the largest lecture theatre in the university main building in anticipation of a big audience. Presumably the talk is an add-on to the weekend one at (I think) Oxford Uni as AndyB posted.

Yes, it does look interesting! I've spent the last ten days trying to wangle time off work to go. It's amazing what a bit of snow and a few calls of "can't get into work" can do, especially when HO ask me to cover some shifts!!!!
A quick look at Mr Edmonds shows he was one of the people (along with Tony Freeth) studying the Antikythera Mechanism, the first orrery.

That looks interesting, I might go along for a look. It would be curious to see why a professor of Astro Physics would be interested in Ancient Astronomy,maybe this should have been posted in the mysteries section?
