For the above, at about 18mins explains the trackways but lots of other interesting stuff on dying, quarrying and shipping throughout.

Similar cart ruts can be found all around England, in soft chalk these are more evident.
Around the coast at Thanet there are many miles of parallel tracks in the chalk on the beaches some are nearly half a mile from the current foreshore. It seems in bygone days that this was the simplest route around from Pegwell to Reculver and everybody from the iron age up to 20th century seaweed gatherers used the beach below high water as the main road.
Similar tracks on the beaches at Robin Hoods bay and again at Lyme Regis are testament to17th. century and later industrial activity.
I know these don't help explain the oddities of some of the Maltese examples but it does show that the process of formation is very common and suggests that there is probably a simple and non mystical explanation?

I'm glad this thread has cropped up again, as since it was last brought into focus I have seen Aubrey Manning's "Landscape Mysteries." If you check this episode on Yorkshire tracks, not only does it explain why the tracks were made but also demonstrates how effective they were for horse-drawn transport.

Okay, the dates might not be comparable to those in Malta but the principle remains the same.
Hope this helps FC (and the link works).

Yes that is a pretty basic mistake and I thought the D'oh was quite appropriate, although Homer at least appreciates he's wrong!

The above quote "Generally the cupmarks are painted in white colour because the symbolize mostly the light of the stars."
in fact is a reasoned argument to refute the linked website.

Reading one sentence was enough.

That's fine, if it doesn't float your boat then please just either move on without comment, or if you are interested enough in the subject to want a discussion then post a reasoned argument to refute whatever it is you disagree with.

But please don't leave a sarcastic comment, it's unnecessary and sets off a chain of events usually following this pattern... it provokes more reactions, then the thread's derailed and I have to wade in, remove posts, appropriately pm, soothe ruffled feathers, wave the whip around and eventually restore peace.

Being intrinsically lazy, I much prefer a quiet life and would very much appreciate your assistance in keeping it that way

Cup marks bug me. I can never see them. I must have wasted hours of my life staring at rocks from various angles and seeing nothing but rock.

Don't get me wrong. I love rocks, hence my name. However, I feel that searching for invisible 'cup marks' is just a waste of my precious admiring-the-megaliths-and-venerating-my-ancestors time

Some words about possible sacral beginnings of the cart-rut system... It could be worthwhile to investigate spaces between the Maltese temples and the seashore, at this angle. Later-time Dionysos, coming to human settlements "from the sea", in a boat equipped with wheels, could have been a development of earlier Mediterranean sacral practices.

First cart-tracks could have been constructed as a processional track-layout connecting sanctuaries, from which a fecundity potential radiated around. In later patriarchalistic religious dogmas of the Near East, a Thundergod end-exterminated the Sea Goddess once for all - to create the World. In earlier insights, He probably used to open Her belly only to take out the Child and to send him to the Land, once in a year.

It`s not only Malta. The chains of Panaghia chapels around the Greek islands`shores provides us also with places, where you can tune easily up to the maritime Mother-and-Child sacred archetype.
