Dear Koen,

you really visited some very beautiful and also „very megalithic“ areas in Denmark.
Hopefully you have also been to:
Hvissehøj/Visihøj (Passage grave with 3 chambers near Alsbjerg)
Blakshøj (large passage grave near Gærum, Frederikshavn)
Skræm/Gundestrup 2 (Double passage grave with 2 side chambers)
Ormehøj (Passage grave with side chamber near Katbjerg)
Jordhøj (Passage grave near Katbjerg)
Kongehøj (Two polygonal dolmens within a kerbed long-barrow)
For these and several other sites I already prepared site descriptions, but did not upload them so far, as the quality of the scans of my old pictures is somewhat poor and does not do these great sites justice. Guess I will upload them anyway now and we may set your much better photos as main-pictures of these sites?
By the way: This is a great link for all danish sites: http://www.dkconline.dk/
It is he official site of Kulturarvsstyrelsen.
Any Danish prehistoric site is registered there and you also can see the sites on maps or aerial shots.

Best regards, Martin

Thanks for your info, Martin! That's very, very great. As Andy said, the site looks well kept so I was surprised there were no signs indicating the location or anything to be found on the web.

Sure, I'll add some other sites I visited in the next days. We traveled from Jylland through Djursland to Møn, also great areas to find some very special megaliths.

Regards,
Koen

Regarding the Tingskov site you added:
According to the official references both sites are prehistoric. The period is not specified (I assume it will be younger than stoneage).

Hello Procyonix and welcome

I'm not an expert on the area. It could be ancient. On the other hand it looks very regular and well kept so it could be modern. Hopefully one of our regulars will know

Would you mind filling in one of our site forms so we can plot it on our maps and see where it is in relation to other sites in Denmark. We always appreciate new information.

Hello!

Thank you for this great site! It's nice to browse around and discover so much information.

I have a question, maybe someone can help me.

During a roundtrip in Denmark last week I went to 'hunt' for megalithic monuments. I am quite familiar with the Dutch and German dolmens and I was anxious to discover the Danish monuments as well. And they were fantastic. I encountered an enourmous amount of dolmens and burial chambers, some of them very well preserved and intact.

While studying the topographic maps to find new megalithic sites, one area particularly caught my attention: the Tingskov near Fjerritslev in Nordjylland. Because I thought the name could possibly mean something like 'assembly forest' (we call it 'ding' or 'geding' in the Netherlands), I presumed the forest might be of respectable age. The map indicated two prehistoric monuments in the area.

The forest indeed was great, and the first site I visited was a surprise: a stone circle, near a (burial?) mound. The circle consists of 10 stones, about 40 cm tall. The diameter was perhaps 10-15 metres. Outside the circle several other stones were erected, maybe to indicate alignments. Two of them pointed directly to the mound next to the circle.

I didn't find any information about this site in local bookstores, and a search on the internet didn't return any results (although I now know that 'tingskov' is a quite common surname ).

Does anyone here know the Tingskov stone circle? Is it prehistoric, or is it a modern re-creation? The coordinates are 57.087654°N, 9.387867°E and the toponym is possibly Søhøje. I uploaded some images to my Picasa album.

Thanks in advance! I really want to know more about this circle.

Regards,
Koen

PS: the other site in the forest is a stone chamber, covered by a mound. Also very nice, a little hard to find but that adds to the 'magic' of discovering these sites, I think .
