Do any of the monuments or the boat launches out to them shut down operation at any time of the year?

Will do!

One other thing where is the best place on the net to get information on Carnac and arranging guided tours? I will be only there a few days in late September before heading up to Portbail in the Normandy area. Any recommendations on must see monuments in the Normandy area?

We stayed at a Best Western right in Carnac. It was great, though the shower was a little small. There was a breakfast buffet (more geared to the German beach crowd with cheese and sausage, but cereal and eggs too), but plenty of good food.

Thanks guys for the advice. I still welcome recommendations on B&Bs in the area owned by native French--gives me a chance to mutilate the native tongue amongst the locals. here's hoping I don't cause an international incident!

A means of transport (bike or otherwise) is necessary. At Carnac there are the alignment but also many other exceptional site as the dolmens of Mane-Kerioned dolmen which one contains beautiful engravings and a few meters from the other side of the road the Mane Keriaval dolmen... Near Carnac there are other beautiful as pierre plate dolmen (my favorite),Mane Lud dolmen, or la table des marchands with the large menhir lying (unfortunately, the entrance fee, € at Locmariaquer. From Locmariaquer, you can take a boat to the island ile au Moines where there is a Cromlech and some dolmens in chemain, from the boat, you could see the Cromlech half submerged on Er Lannic island and Gavrinis Cairn. On the other side of the Gulf of Morbihan, there is the impressive (PetitMont) Tumulus a huge Arzon which is composed of several dolmen (unfortunately, the entrance fee, € .

There is an excellent bus service...but as The Captain says...a bicycle(or hire one of those 4 seater pedalling rickshaw-style affairs)
