Its not the most serious of issues and sorry if its been mentioned before, but those plaques 'In rememberance' that you find on natural megaliths i.e. rocks and bolders... don't you think they're a bit selfish the people who do it? I mean its sad when someone dies but they weren't the only bugegr who enjoyed walking there.
I keep noticing it, late last night I was having a bracing amble on a beautiful and remote rock strewn cliff edge and felt the scene was slightly spoiled by several plaques in memory of loved ones and even a carving in the rock pointing to where the plaques were!

I just can't believe the mentality, to me its on a par with grafitti and carving or maybe I'm making too much of a fuss?

Totally agree LB , same goes for summits of hills etc . In Kintyre there is even a cairn complete with plaque on top of rock art . Beside the Hermitage near Dunkeld there is a wooden sculpture in a lovely setting , the sculpture has lots of small memorial plaques , this to me is far more sensible and appropriate as are memorial seats found at easily accessed viewpoints . I suppose "offerings " are no different .

No more a scar on the natural landscape than a burial mound or a stone circle.
