In essence I agree with you Coldrum, however...
The report says there were detailed maps and photographs of the "excavations." This sounds to me like the man had at the least, an interest in archaeology.
In my (albeit very small) archaeological training, I was told that 90% of British digs were for rescue purposes. This means that scheduled areas get very little funding and may never be looked at further.
"Coins, bricks, part of a Roman central heating system and painted plaster." Aren't all these things pretty well known about already.
Personally I don't agree with the man's actions, but I can't help being sympathetic to someone who opposes the bureaucratic approach that "archaeology" takes to our heritage.

Perhaps a hefty fine as well.
It's a shame that there are people out there who think only of themselves and are quite happy to destroy scheduled monuments for their own pleasure.
The same is happening in the fossil world where specimens that are important to science are smuggled into America and Britain for collectors who pay vast sums of money for them.
I get sick of seeing our heritage being sold on ebay by those who want to make money.
What some people fail to realize is that every bit of archeology no matter how small can tell us so much about our ancestors. By digging up sites for personal gain and profit they are denying the rest of us our past.
