Could someone write a new FAQ section to the tune of "Commercial use of our photos" that explains this - ie Yes but only if photographers have stated this in their profile, etc. Also general copyright stuff about use (or not) of our photos.
Cheers,
Andy

It's a question I've wondered my self of late.
I never set out to take any pics to sell, but as a result of some being seen here, they've appeared on other websites, a forthcoming book and a magazine.
I ain't been paid for any of them but I was asked first! (And hopefully the ones from the book will realise some dosh - not that I'm mercenary, just a poor gardener! )
The other website (24hour museum) just took a low-res copy, the mag wanted high-res jpegs of a certain canvas size or actual prints. (Not being well-up on image-editing, I just mailed the photos!).
I never expected to sell any, now I'm wondering if it'd be possible

Cheers
Dave

I've stolen Ocifant's statement for the moment and put it in my profile.

Andy, the tick box is a good idea wen you get the time.

Perhaps when we know which of us want to sell - we can discuss and come up with a strategy. I take the view that we can sometimes get lucky if we wait for the right buyer to stumble on the right picture by chance. But we would get a whole lot luckier if we put our stall out in the market place and targeted buyers. The market is highly competitive and only the very best shots will stand any sort of a chance. All too often, when the general press want prehistoric pics, its the hackneyed ones of lurid sunrises over Stonehenge that they go for. Market research would mean finding out what it is that buyers want.

Something I'm intending to introduce is a tick box in peoples user settings, similar to the 'Subscribe to newsletter' one. This would be a tick for people to say 'My photos are available for sale'. Initially this would just display a message to this effect. (You could in fact add a message to this effect in your Profile at the moment).

Nice idea, Andy. I've updated my profile in this manner (not that I expect to actually sell any...)

This is a 'Freq Asked Question' we could answer in the FAQ if someone can come up with the relevant 'Questions' and 'Answers'. All admins can update these without needing me. We could use some help updating the introductory text in the FAQ.

Reproduction quality images would be supplied direct by the photographer by e-mail, CD-R or physical medium.

For the low quantity of requests we get I feel the above is adequate, an on demand download system is possible but a lot of effort to set up, and would require everyone uploading all their images in high-res to a private area of the Portal.

Cheers,
Andy

Yes Kelpie - it is easy to add your name to a Portal photo as you say. bec-zog and one or two others sometimes do so. I'm sure we could sell photos if we put our minds to it. One problem I have is the extreme variation in quality of our prehistoric photos. They range from excellent to pretty awful, but it is a community database first and foremost. It would be impossible to market the whole collection to photo editors. We need to retain all of them, but would need to showcase the best - big editing/review job.

The lo-res issue may be OK for those that want to print the image but it doesn't stop them using it online. Besides, you can get quite a decent print from a lo-res image with modern printers.

As to the cost of software, the easiest way is just to put on your name and date using whatever image software you already use. If you print straight from a camera or CD then I accept there will be a cost involved.

I'm luck enough to have recently sold a photo for what I thought was an excellent price - it just made me think if they were paying that for it the temptation to use without asking must be great for smaller organisations. I'll continue to think on it.

Taking the simple approach, I'd stick with the low-res approach.

If people want a hi-res version of any of my pictures, they can contact me through the web site. I've never sold a picture yet, so am not prepared to buy into the watermarking software market just yet...

Good point. We tend to think that using low resolution photos will make them unsuitable for commercial use. However, the idea of moving into the Landscape and Historical Galleries was to widen our appeal to photo editors of magazines etc. In which case, we would need to have access to higher resolution photos and market them effectively. That way we would gain proper remuneration for the individual photographer and with a percentage going to the Portal by way of commission. We haven't really tackled the issues yet.
