LECTURE: The Roman Coin Hoard from Alton Barnes

an illustrated lecture by Dr Sam Moorhead of the British Museum.

In 2005, metal detectorists discovered a hoard of over 3,000 Roman coins on farmland near the village of Alton Barnes in the Vale of Pewsey. The Hoard, buried in a grey-ware pot some 1,800 years ago, includes a number of particular rarities including coins struck by little-known short-lived emperors and usurpers such as Florian and Laelian. Many of the coins are in a particularly fine condition, still retaining their original silver plating. The Hoard was declared ‘treasure’ at a Coroner’s inquest, and it is hoped it can be acquired for display in the Museum's Roman Gallery.

Dr Sam Moorhead, a member of WANHS, is a specialist on Roman (and Byzantine) coins at the British Museum and author of many papers in books, national journals and the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine - Wiltshire Studies. He has made a detailed study of the hoard and as well as describing this stunning and valuable find with its many silver coins, he will explain what it can tell us about the circulation of coins within the Roman Empire and the likely date of its concealment.
