thanks for that andy, the magic map was xcellent. as regards the info i
was looking for, i had a huge stroke of luck. i popped into hertford museum and met a lady from who was showing a sensitivity map of herts . on talking to her, she brought up the area of my interest and
astonished me. using the gov. data base she pinpointed every thing
that had been found . from part of a roman road that was thought to
go to grt. chesterford, to finds of quern stones ,pottery, bronze age
axes and on. she then asked me if i would like the data to study at my
own leisure, and sent me the data through the post. apparently not to
many people know that you can get historic enviroment data from
local council. so if any body needs any info (it is very comprehensive)
i suggest giving their respective council a vist. i had mine on paper,
but i was offered the choice of it being sent to my pc.

Get stuck into the Magic Map and see what you can find:
http://www.magic.gov.uk
I searched for the village of Little Hormead and chose to see data of Rural Designations - Statutrory (that's what you want to see scheduled monuments and suchlike)
All I could see on the map is lots of moated sites
Getting a grid ref and searching on the Portal gives one of our mysterious pudding stone trail

and look on that page for other nearby sites

i am all a bit new to this, so i do ask you to be patient with me. i have read the herts cc pdf file on
this area, and all i can find are a couple of references to neolithic/early bronze age.
there are apparrently at least 3 ring ditches(plough razed) plus cropmarks:linear ditches:enclosures and trackways. i know of the bowl barrow called "bummers hill" at little hormead; but again its all a bit vague".
