Hi Andy,
Orford Ness is a lovely place... Orford Castle is well worth a visit... Edward II built it I think. The views from the top of the keep are stunning. Blythburgh and Southwold are worth dropping in on too.
Unfortunately, I doubt I'll be around in August, as we're planning moving North around that time.... then going ferral for a few weeks around S. Wales, Cornwall, New Forest n' Wiltshire while the little 'un is at her granny's in Clacton for her hols.
If you're around any time before Aug, gimme a shout n' I'll take you on a Norfolk hillfort tour.... some of which I'll have pics to upload soon.
Best wishes..... Andy H

We've booked a week near Orford Ness in August, so a bit south of you Andy H but another area that interests me. Hopefully we can meet up for an explore.
Very interesting R4 prog on Orford Ness last week

East Anglia is an archaeologist's dream as there's tons of stuff below the surface... but not a great deal to see above it!
Holkham and Warham Camps in North Norfolk are both worth a visit. Both are Iron Age Iceni remains with impressively huge ditches.

Trouble with finding prehistoric sites in East Anglia is AGRICULTURE and no real stone - just chalk and river gravel with a few erratics. We have loads of earthen barrows, henges, cursuses etc, but they are mostly heavily ploughed out. Go up in a plane and the bewildering pattern of crop marks shows just how rich is the archaeology and how the land has been settled and re settled over and over again. We have some good barrows in Suffolk (Troston and Black Hill) , the mighty Romano-British barrows at Bartlow (Cambs/Essex border) and very many more. Look on Magic Map and there they are by the hundred - go out with a camera and there is almost nothing to photograph.

From bec-zog
Loads of sites in Norfolk
e.g. Salthouse heath (q.v.).... look out for flint tools
Megaliths unlikely as most Norfolk Bronze age structures were timber/earth based.

Andy... I live in Norwich n' I tell you mate, there's not a lot of surviving megalithic stuff around these parts.
Just outside of Norwich at Trowse is Arminghall Henge... but if you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't spot it as an earthwork. The ambience is also spoiled by being sandwiched between an electrical substation and a house n' surrounded by pylons.
Also at Trowse, down Whitlingham Lane are old flintmines... but again, you wouldn't recognise them as such unless you were looking for them.
Thetford Forest has quite a lot of archaeological sites, but not much to see on the surface. Grimes Graves is quite impressive, with the surface honeycombed with old flintmine shafts. You can go into one, but you can't go far. There's also an Iceni Village quite nearby.
I've not heard of the Weasenham Barrows... but there's shit loads of R*man and Medieval stuff around here!

You know we're thinking of going on holiday to Norfolk/Suffolk, partly frustrated by the lack of Portal content from the East. Now that's what I call extreme 'stones' hunting
I don't, in a nutshell but good luck and keep in touch,

just a note to anybody out there interested in Barrows in Mid-Norfolk especially those in the Weasenham area. Please contact me.
I am really interested in the Barrows in Weasenham and I have carried out quite a lot of research already but I would love to hear from anyone else who is interested in the same Barrow group.
