Survey and excavations on enclosures in Cranborne Chase The dry summer of 1995 provided an exceptional opportunity for aerial photographers to record many previously unrecognised cropmark sites, as well as to add further detail to those already known. A summary of those sites discovered in North Dorset as a consequence of this dry weather was presented to the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society in October 1995 by Martin Green. This led the present author to consider the possibility of examining several of these sites further, using geophysical survey and limited excavation work. The Stone Age Bog Group European hunter-gatherer bog sites have produced well-preserved organics which enrich our understanding of this important period. These include high resolution climatic and environmental records and rare cultural material.
Innovative techniques are being applied to these unique records; however, many sites are rapidly deteriorating and some of Europe’s most important heritage is vanishing. This group has been set up with the intention of bringing together specialists who work on bog sites across Europe to discuss cutting-edge scientific methodologies and to evaluate the threats to this valuable cultural resource with a view to future action and collaboration.
