MeathDespite the very bad weather, and the tail end of a hurricane, the sun made a brief but spectacular appearance inside the chamber of Cairn T at Loughcrew on the 22nd September, on the eve of the Autumn Equinox. Cairn T is aligned so that the rising sun on the equinox illuminates some pretty fascinating carvings on the backstone of the rear chamber.

Other Archaeology By most modern standards, household pets are looked at as companion animals. It can be assumed that people in the past acquired a similar affection to household or working animals. Historical evidence surrounding the keeping of pets clearly shows that animals were prized not only for their household duties, but some, for more non-practical reasons.
Pet-keeping in antiquity was a common practice. How the animals were treated can often be seen archaeologically.

Site Watch The construction of a motorway by the Irish Government through one of Ireland's most historic areas has been condemned in a BBC Radio Ulster documentary, Tar on Tara, by the country's foremost poet, Seamus Heaney, and other international experts. The M3 motorway is well under construction through the lush green and historical countryside of County Meath.

Newgrange For the first time ever, the 2007 Winter Solstice illumination of the passage and chamber at Newgrange was streamed live on the internet by Heritage Ireland. The webcast and an exhibition at the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the re-discovery of the Winter Solstice Phenomenon at Newgrange by Professor O’Kelly in 1967.

The celebrations begin with the first ever public vote to choose the nation's favourite image of the most treasured places of Scotland.

Because it was just after the equinox I found plenty of evidence of pagan use of the stones. A friend was was also enjoying the day out and she was amused by the different reactions to some of the site between myself and these people.

Photography The Dragonhouses of Evia island in Greece are buildings attributed to the late Neolithic/Bronze Age up to the Hellenistic period. They appear to be religious sites of the Dryops, the first inhabitants of this area. They possibly represent an unknown facet of Ancient Greek scientific thought.
