Ancient Settlement in Syria. Ugarit was the ancient capital of the Ugarit kingdom. The earliest settlement was a small fortified town in 8000 BCE. Ugarit was already important enough to be fortified with a wall by about 6000 BCE. Ugarit flourished between 1600 and 1200 BCE, when palaces, temples, shrines, and libraries were built there. </description>
