Canmore Site 41054

A crannog, on the east side of Ashgrove, Loch, was discovered, and excavated by Smith in 1868. It consisted of a mound about 22m in diameter, which before the loch was partly drained had been surrounded by water. It had a wall of sandstone blocks laid in a mortar of yellow clay. This wall, which has been built upon a layer of branches over the moss, was 3m thick on the land side and 1.20m on the loch side, forming an enclosure 9m in diameter. It was connected to the shore by a causeway of sandstone blocks. Inside the enclosure was a drain built of sandstone blocks and a water tank. A kitchen midden lay on the south east side of the building, close to the wall. It contained several chisels, a knife, a spoon, and two needles, all of bone, several hammer stones, a perforated piece of gas coal, and a pair of steel sheep shears.

An ancient structure, 45cms in diameter and 120cm deep, was revealed in 1882 when sand was removed from the side of the Garnock Water at Dirrans. It was built of smooth, water-worn whinstones which were very much decomposed. There was no lid or covering and a small tree grew on top. In the bottom were a few centimetres of fine greyish powdery material which was sifted, but no remains were found.
