Clonmacnois (Cluain Mhic Nois) the great Celtic monastic site beside the River Shannon, dates from 545 CE when St Ciaran (512-45), from Connaught, founded a monastery here. There are 3 9th century crosses, 2 round towers, one still intact, grave-slabs from the 8th-12th century, the ruins of 8 churches and St Ciaran's cathedral, and much else. It was once referred to as 'a monastic city'.</description>
