Higher Town Bay
Higher Town Bay submitted by Brian Byng : Higher Town Stone Row, St Martins on the Isles of Scilly. Located at SV 9330 1530 on Higher Town Beach and partially covered at high tide. Only three stones exist. The Scillies are of course a landscape that was like Dartmoor but which since Bronze Age times has been flooded. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A Row of Three Stones in the Scilly Isles

Located at SV 9330 1530 on Higher Town Beach and partially covered at high tide. Only three stones exist. The Scillies are of course a landscape that was like Dartmoor but which since Bronze Age times has been flooded.

Update October 2019: This single stone row, 15m long, is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Higher Town Bay, which includes a description and a list of online resources for more information.

The site is scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1018116 (Prehistoric to Romano-British ritual, funerary and settlement remains on Par Beach, St Martin's), recorded in its own right as Pastscape Monument No. 1180063 and as HER 7660 (PAR BEACH - Neolithic stone alignment, Bronze Age stone alignment) on the Cornwall and Scilly HER.

Pastscape tells us: "(this is) An alignment of three large upright stones, interpreted as a probable stone row. It is located on the foreshore of Par Beach and lies just above the Mean High Water line".

Higher Town Bay submitted by Thorgrim : The enigmatic stone row on Higher Town beach on St Martins. The dazzling white sands are always shifting and in this picture only two of the three stones are visible. (1 comment)

Higher Town Bay
Higher Town Bay submitted by Thorgrim : Is it a row or a wall? There are many submerged Bronze Age field walls in Scilly (see Bryher and Samson) but those stones are rounded boulders. These stones do look different, but we can only see the tops of them. Judging by other standing stones in Scilly, we could expect these stones to be seven feet tall. They do appear to point in an alignment to Chapel Down where there are entrance grave...

This alignment is exposed at lower tides & is consequently subject to potential wave erosion.
