Works Carn, Bryher Chambered Cairn in the Isles of Scilly

An oval shaped cairn built out from the side of Samson Hill on Bryher. Incorporating three natural rocks it is revetted with large orthostats. Chamber is made from slabs set on edge with additional walling.

This is a view of the chamber from above, from the promontary of Works Carn itself. It is quite difficult to get access this site owing to high growth of gorse, brambles and bracken. The circular kerb around the grave is almost complete, and can be seen particularly well on the right of the picture. Two of five capstones are still in place.

The oval entrance grave is a chambered cairn revetted by an almost complete kerb of huge orthostats of which 21 are visible. Impressive!

The chamber extends for most of the length of the grave. The sides are slabs set on edge with some stone walling.
