Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Barra and Vatersay

Described in 'The Healing Wells of the Western Isles' as being both a blessing and wishing well, Tobar Chaluim Chille is marked on the 25k OS map merely as 'W'. It does not feature on the 50k series, but overlooks the 'Tower' marked as Dun Mhic Leoid at NL64769964 on those maps - the tower is visible in Loch Tangasdail.

It can be found (with persistence!) about 2km NW of Castlebay on the A888, but it does not feature on the RCAHMS database. There are no signposts to the well, but the local horses know the way, so follow them! Incidentally, 'tobar' means 'well', and includes springs in much the same way as the welsh word 'fynnon' does.
