Ancient Village or Settlement in Barra and Vatersay. Neolithic/EBA settlement site at Alt Christal
I excavated on this site in 1991 under the direction of Patrick Foster, as part of Prof Keith Branigan's Sheffield University dig.

NL69NE 10 67 98 to NF 64 00

From NL 69 98 to NF 64 00. The coastal erosion survey of Barra was commenced in 1991, with a 50m wide corridoor of coastline running from Brevaig (NL 693 985) through Castlebay to Tangusdale (NF 648 005). Between Brevaig and Castlebay sites and monuments of any type and period were very few, and rarely threatened.

In contrast, the coast of the Tangaval peninsula was rich in sites and were recorded in the 50m corridor, of which only Dun Ban was previously known. Many of the sites were probably post-Medieval, but apart from the Neolithic/EBA settlement site at Alt Christal there were three large round houses which are provisionally identified as probably of Iron Age date.
